ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women are vulnerable against COVID-19 infection due to physiological and immunological changes. COVID-19 in pregnancy affects fetal well-being with a potential for vertical infection. AIM: This study aims to determine the incidence of vertical infection and anti-severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) antibodies in infants born to mothers with positive COVID-19 infection. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Amniotic fluid, swabs of the newborn's nasopharynx and oropharynx, and swabs of the placenta were examined using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for SARS-CoV-2. Serological examination was performed by Electro-Chemiluminescence Immunoassay on infant's blood. RESULT(S): Four of 33 pregnant women gave birth to infants positive SARS-CoV-2 infection. RT-PCR examination of all amniotic fluid and placental swabs was negative for SARS-CoV-2. Four of 33 infants (12.1%) showed negative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) results but positive SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, another 4 newborns (12.1%) showed positive PCR results, but no SARS-CoV-2 antibodies detected. The remaining 25 babies (75.8%) showed both negative PCR and serologic results. CONCLUSION(S): No evidence of vertical transmission found in this study.Copyright © 2023 Cut Meurah Yeni, Zinatul Hayati, Sarjani M. Ali, Hasanuddin Hasanuddin, Rusnaidi Rusnaidi, Cut Rika Maharani.

ABSTRACT

Catastrophes such as natural disasters, conflicts, and epidemics bring difficulties and misfortunes, but people also retain hope. The recent coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has tested people on what they feel and are reliant on, particularly their beliefs. It is intriguing to examine the perspectives of a community with strong religious beliefs during this pandemic. In this article, we explore the religious perspectives of Sharia-based communities in Aceh Province, Indonesia, on the origin and meaning of the pandemic, which might affect their belief systems. We limited our critical assessment to philosophical theodicies and the shift in rationalizing the outbreak. Our study revealed how the virus triggered people to integrate logic with spiritual thoughts. Data were retrieved from twenty informants with various backgrounds to sample a cross-section of perspectives. During the difficult days of the epidemic, people pondered ‘who' and ‘why', which led them to think about theodicy, which we used as the basis for our research. By utilizing a narrative inquiry, three premises were classified: COVID-19 is God's doing, COVID-19 is not an intervention of God, and COVID-19 is still controlled by God, not other factors. The first premise turned out to be the dominant one, being based on the locals' strong belief in the omnipotence of God. This reveals a widespread understanding of the origin of the pandemic that can be compared with other systems of meaning in different religions. © 2023 Ulster Institute for Social Research. ABSTRACT

The recent Covid-19 pandemic has swept the globe. As a result, there has been a spike in the number of relative poor who are experiencing economic hardships. This poses a predicament for the unbankable, reducing their options to apply for funding via banking products. With the available financial capacity, zakat institutions are viewed as the closest alternative in terms of being a source of funding, either through the microfinacing method or the qard hasan principle. Zakat is considered capable of becoming a social entrepreneurial system and a worthy alternative. The question is whether Islam permits microfinancing using zakat funds. If permitted, what is the rationale for distributing zakat through microfinance? Are there asnaf entreprenuers in Malaysia ready to take microfinance from the zakat fund to finance their businesses? This study is done using the case study method by conducting a semi-structured interview with zakat expertise and asnaf entreprenuers. Based on the content analysis, the findings of the study indicate that Islam permits microfinance using zakat funds. Asnaf entreprenuers are likewise eager to acquire microfinance from zakat money in order to strengthen their economic position and develop in life. This microfinancing is expected to have a good effect, particularly on the rising demand for asnaf entreprenuers. So, it is expected that asnaf entreprenuers will be able to switch from being a zakat recipient to a zakat payer within a certain amount of time. This will increase the amount of zakat and decrease the number of poor people. Even the poor's economy can be stimulated without usury (riba). © 2023 UNIVERSITY OF ZILINA.

ABSTRACT

New normal routines have continued to campaign since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in 2019. One of these new habits is to keep washing your hands after every activity. Hand washing can be done using hand sanitizer or soap and washed in running water. As a result, the need for water to meet the habit of washing hands is expected to affect domestic water needs in a certain area. Therefore, this study aims to estimate the increase in domestic water demand during the COVID-19 pandemic caused by the new routine of washing hands in the research area in the city of Banda Aceh, Indonesia. In addition, this study will also estimate domestic water needs until 2030 if the COVID-19 pandemic has not ended. Innovations in this research can help increase efficiency in water use and help prevent the spread of disease. This study uses a sampling method in several places in Banda Aceh city to obtain data related to the volumetric water used, handwashing time, and frequency of handwashing. Besides, data in water discharge from water supply companies in Banda Aceh city from 2018 to 2020 was also collected. Finally, data on the population of Banda Aceh city was also collected. The information and data are then analyzed using a statistical approach between supply and demand. Although it appears that there is a projected increase in domestic water demand of 1.89% per year due to the COVID-19 pandemic from 2021 to 2030, this is still 41.48% greater than the ability of water supply companies in the city of Banda Aceh to meet domestic water needs up to 2030. In conclusion, if the pandemic continues until 2030, with the expected increase in population, the domestic water needs in Banda Aceh city will still be fulfilled. © 2023 WITPress. ABSTRACT

The City of Banda Aceh continues to experience rapid development both in terms of economy, infrastructure, and transportation which has resulted in increased autos mobilities. This increased mobility has an impact on the increasing tendency to use motorcycles which harm the environment for instances traffic congestion, air pollution, noise, and accidents. The Government of Aceh has implemented a policy called Bus Trans Koetaradja with the concept of Bus Rapid Transit-Lite (BRT-lite), but due to inaccuracy and lack of exclusive lanes, it has caused people to be reluctant to shift from private mode to the urban Bus. Therefore, this aiming at investigates the determinants of shifting travel mode choice from motorcycle to BRT-lite based travel survey conducted in Banda Aceh using the contexts of Stated Preference. Due to pandemic Covid-19, the data was collected using online-based questionnaire survey using Google form. A total of 400 data is valid and used for the analysis of travel mode choice using Binary Logistic approach. The results of the binary logistic regression analysis reveal that determinants of selecting motorcycle as a representative daily mode used is the distance to make a trip, travel time within origin-destination, and vehicle operating costs. The probability of selecting travel modes is 70% and 30% for motorcycle and BRT-lite, respectively. © 2022 Author(s).

ABSTRACT

Purpose: During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020–2021 in Indonesia, the indoor environmental quality (IEQ) of local houses occupied by infected occupants was adversely affected. This paper aims to appraise the IEQ of the affected Banda Aceh houses with insights into enabling them to be resilient against the negative impacts of the pandemic. Design/methodology/approach: Quantitative field measurement in the case study of five concrete houses located in urban areas which are affected by IEQ factors: (1) indoor air quality (IAQ), (2) thermal comfort and (3) visual comfort, compared against the Indonesian National standard (SNI). The case study involved measurement of the first two factors over 24 h, while the third factor was measured during sun hours. Considering the limitations of the measuring tools for logging available data in this research, air quality is measured from 8 am to 10 pm. Findings: Thermal comfort in the affected houses is generally regarded as warm, optimal and cool comfort, indicated by the effective temperatures of between 20.5 and 27.1°C. Frequently closed windows, limited land area and access had caused a lack of air circulation, with air velocity of dominantly 0 m/s in the houses. The illuminance of natural light received in three houses was insufficient – less than 120 lux as compared with the other two. This study found an uptrend of higher air temperature and relative humidity in the affected houses resulting in poorer IAQ;conversely, the higher the air velocity in the houses, the fewer the indoor air pollutants such as formaldehyde (HCHO), total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) and carbon dioxide (CO2). Originality/value: This study is a pioneer in evaluating IEQ in houses occupied by COVID-19 patients in Indonesia, especially in dwelling cases in Aceh Province. It also encompasses environmental and societal challenges to sustaining resilient buildings in pandemic hit regions. © 2022, Emerald Publishing Limited.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is a comorbid factor with a double risk of increased morbidity and mortality due to COVID-19. Therefore, diabetic patients need to prevent COVID-19 seriously. However, they also need to regularly check their condition in health-care services, such as hospitals and community health centers, making them more vulnerable to COVID-19 infection. One factor playing a significant role in controlling diabetes is self-management. Self-management activities can increase independence in caring for and controlling the health of diabetic patients. Then, it also enhances self-efficacy to improve the quality of life among diabetic patients. AIM: This study aimed to examine the effect of self-management on quality of life among patients with Type 2 DM. METHODS: Fifty patients with type 2 DM consented to participate in the study. The patients were assigned to either the control group receiving standard care or the experimental group receiving standard care and self-management. The program was constructed using Kanfer’s three self-management steps, including self-monitoring, self-assessment, and self-reinforcement. The effect of the intervention was measured by the WHO Quality of Life Questionnaire (WHOQOL-BREF), consisting of 26 statement items on a 5-point Likert scale and a self-management intervention evaluation checklist. Data were analyzed using an independent sample t-test. RESULTS: The results showed a significant difference between the pre-and post-intervention in the experimental group’s quality of life of type 2 DM patients (P = 0.000 and α = 0.01). CONCLUSION: This study found that self-management effectively increases the quality of life among diabetic patients. The health-care providers, especially the nurses interested in community and family health nursing, are suggested to improve the self-management of diabetic patients to prevent complications and improve the quality of life of the patients.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has caused significant health problems globally. COVID-19 should be considered a systemic disease since it involves multiple systems, including the hematopoietic system and the immune system. AIM: This study sought to determine the relationship between the lymphocyte levels and the severity of COVID-19 patients in Indonesia. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among COVID-19 patients at Dr. Zainoel Abidin Hospital Banda Aceh Indonesia from August 27, to September 20, 2021. The subjects were recruited using consecutive sampling method and the data were obtained at their admission to the hospital. Chi-squared test was used to assess the association between lymphocyte levels and the severity of patients. RESULTS: A total of 280 COVID-19 patients included of which 56.9% (91/160) of the patients with moderate severity, 76.1% (51/67) with a severe condition, and 84.9% (45/53) with critical severity had lymphopenia. There were no patients with lymphocytosis found in this study (0%). The Chi-squared test suggested that the lymphocyte level was significant associated with the severity of COVID-19 patients with p < 0.001. CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that the lower the lymphocyte level, the higher the severity of COVID-19 patients. The level of lymphocyte is therefore potentially to be used as predictor for the disease severity and needs to be monitored regularly in COVID-19 patients.
